THE ROLE OF YOUTH AS VOTERS IN ELECTIONS
Kaummuslim.com - The General Election Commission (KPU) of Malang City put ownership material to students and interns / PKL students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) & State Islamic University (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang with the theme Knowing Elections and the Role of Youth as Voters, acting as a resource person for the Chairman of the KPU Malang City Aminah Asminingtyas.
The presentation of the material began with the opportunity to give students an opportunity to provide opinions and views on the students' understanding of the definition according to the word election. "Elections are a democratic party, it is a process of electing regional heads and people's representatives in legislative and executive forums," mila replied, one intern student according to UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang who was present at the election class earlier.
Aminah Asminingtyas then reviewed the regulations or basic rules for elections & elections, definitions of elections, principles of elections, as well as the duties, responsibilities, & obligations of the KPU of Malang City in carrying out elections and elections. Aminah Asminingtyas revealed that elections are a vehicle for realizing people's sovereignty, a means of making a constitutional change of leader, a vehicle for political leaders to gain legitimacy, and a vehicle for people to participate in the political process.
Aminah Asminingtyas also revealed that novice voters are voters who are going to exercise their right to vote for the first time, novice voters consist of citizens who have qualified to vote, including Indonesian citizens, are already 17 (seventeen) years old or older or have/have been married, registered as voters in their area, are not mentally/memory impaired, & nir is being disenfranchised based on a court decision that has a permanent law.

Therefore, we hope that students will be present to be agents of change in the success of the elections using putting understanding and inviting residents to put their voices in determining community representatives," explained Aminah Aminingtyas to the students.
This step by the Malang City KPU is also a form of effort to introduce and educate ownership in the younger generation of novice voters. Where that generation is one of the voter bases that needs attention as a novice voter of young voters. The proposal to withhold the application for the 2024 elections, the elites and political parties, drew protests from a number of parties. Whatever the reasons presented by the elite & party circles are judged to be unreasonable.
UGM Political and Election Observer, Wawan Mas'udi, S.IP., M.P.A., Ph.D. considers the proposal to postpone the implementation of elections unreasonable & counter-productive to the development and democratic system that has been built so far. Elections & the circulation of power that is routine is actually as a momentum for the people or society to become the owners of sovereignty in the democratic system to make corrections.
"Elections are a tool to control the course of government, both in the executive and in the legislature. This means that the regular elections are the foundation for the electoral democracy that we have, if the foundation is only questioned, the development of our democracy will obviously point to a setback," he said at fisipol UGM, Monday (7/3).
According to Wawan, it must be understood that elections and changes of power that are routine are the most basic sizes so as not to be disturbed. If disturbed, it will certainly create setbacks, and it is proven that for more than 20 years the elections are able to take place regularly & the public or the public puts a religion that is grand for the system that is built.
"Although it must be admitted that every time an election application there is always a fight, it is always able to be overcome. This means that there is a process of political maturation that takes place at the people's level, & this means that the development of democracy in Indonesia is very admirable," he explained.
He said that in indonesia's post-democratic political history, there has never been a delay in the implementation of elections because there is no compelling situation to hold back. It's just that due to the pandemic situation, it had held back the schedule for local elections (pilkada).
Even so, he continued, it must still be remembered that if you hold local elections (pilkada) there is a mechanism for appointing implementing officials (Plt) &others. Meanwhile, local elections to elect the chairman of this region are not the same as elections that are generic or national in nature.
"And we know almost all countries at the time of the pandemic were rescheduling. If then the 2024 elections are postponed using reasons that are not clear, it can be dangerous, it is possible for the public to lose confidence in the democratic system that has been built," said the Dean of Physipol UGM.
Wawan argued that delaying the conduct of the election was a tough process. Especially in the context of Indonesia where the 1945 Constitution mandates that every 5 years a general election must be held.
By delaying means sine qua non changes in the constitution, & make changing the constitution nir as easy as imagined. It is possible that the election is postponed if a compelling reason is found, for example, Indonesia is experiencing a crisis situation or is facing a pandemic.
"We are not in a crisis situation. It's true that we are facing a pandemic, it is true that the nation is struggling to face many things but not in crisis. The pandemic does exist but we have been able to manage it, as a result of which the reason for the delay is as difficult for the foundation to make at this time," he explained.
Moreover, residents during the 2 years of the pandemic have been quite educated, and have been able to invest in a new way of life. People are considered to have been resilient to the pandemic, and vaccine coverage is already relatively high.
Wawan assessed that the community seems to be ready for the 2024 elections. The personal elections that were supposed to be held in 2019 &postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic as a relative capital experience for it.
"Even though it was postponed & still a pandemic, the elections that took place were quite interesting because the participation rate was quite high & it was not proven that there was a spread or became a cluster. We have to appreciate that experience & the people are strong relative to such situations," he said.
Even if a number of elites and political parties continue to insist on restraining, Wawan said, perpetuating power is considered a strong motive behind these expectations. They want to perpetuate the power they have today without having to bother preparing for elections.
Even this raises suspicions about the unpreparedness of political parties to fight in elections. Especially the elites who proposed because they were unprepared and unable to convince the public so that the electability survey was not boosted.
"By being postponed, their position and power will be long, be it in parliament or anywhere else. So more so that's more, other motives I think are hard to find. We know that the pandemic situation has caused us to struggle but we are not in a crisis situation, there is no political crisis and there is no economic crisis," he explained.
Therefore, he suggested, political parties that have the function of aggregation with all the articulation of interests, are now precisely the momentum to prepare themselves & explain the best performance in front of the public. How can they contribute through their members in the Dpr, through regional leaders or their cadres who are regional heads to signal to the people that they can overcome and can help this nation get out according to the current pandemic.
"It is precisely for political parties when this prepares for the Election process, it will be scheduled for 2024. It is still two years to be able to prepare there, prepare cadres to prepare for good campaign events, educate the people about how elections can be carried out," he added.
Wawan pointed out for political parties during the two years as a beautiful momentum to prepare themselves. The party is expected to be prepared for the elections ahead and should think there.
